About Dickson Street - Artist’s Note:
“Our Old Galt series explores some of the most iconic areas of our scenic downtown from unique vantage points. For many, a Saturday in Galt is not complete without a visit to Dickson Street. Once there, you will wander through the Cambridge Farmer’s Market, often with a bagel sammie and a coffee from Roy’s Roast, while you collect your groceries for the week. From there, you stroll past the chime of the Historic Galt Town Hall clock tower, into nearby shops - perhaps restocking your favourite stationery from Phidon Pens, grabbing a refueling chai and new reading material from Disko, followed by a detour onto Ainslie Street to stop in at Reid Chocolates or The Witty & Co. Your walk takes you back toward the river, with the historic Carnegie Library leading your way.
When we think of ‘Downtown Galt,’ it makes sense that Main Street may be the first image that comes to mind. What we may forget is just how much the heart of our little piece of Cambridge beats on Dickson Street, with City Hall and the Centre for the Arts just out of view to the right, along with Civic Square - a space that hosts so many of our community events throughout the seasons. In capturing these illustrations of Galt, I wanted to ensure that Dickson Street was included and received the recognition it deserves, as a central part of our community hub.”
